"One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art."
- Oscar Wilde from Phrases & Philosophies for the Use of the Young

Gameplay Instructions:

  • For Keyboard: Both arrow keys and wasd movement is supported.
  • For Touchscreen: swipe up, down, left, or right.
  • Try to reach all 5 classrooms (goal points marked by being doorways) without running into the other students rooming.
  • Gnarls (the player character) cannot move through tables or stools nor move them out of the way.
  • The counting down timer is the indication for how much the player will bank into their score once they enter a goal, there's no penalty for letting the timer hit 0 other than a successful run being worth no points.
  • Taking damage subtracts 10 seconds from the timer.
  • Collision is not very lenient, sprites are 16 by 16 px, and hit boxes are 12 by 12px.

Visual reading response to Susan Sontag's Notes on Camp (1964):

  • A very serious attempt at creating a video game, using the classic Frogger arcade game as the inspiration to recreate and work off of (see the typical exercise to learn a coding language or in this case a game engine being to try recreating a classic video game such as pong, snake, or in my case frogger) .
  • Created using Godot, and it's internal GDScript for scripting language.
  • 100% probably not coded well nor optimally at all, in the words of the wise: "I'm going to become a shitty game dev in two weeks."
  • Themed around The New School as the player character is Gnarls, the school mascot.
  • Fun-fact: there's 11 different sprites for the students walking back and forth which gets randomly assigned at the start of the game.
  • All the audio elements were hand-made. Inspiration for the music was Retro Zone from Frogger: He's Back (1997).
  • The pixel fonts are from two different Legend of Zelda games for gameboy: The Oracle games ( Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons), as well as Link's Awakening. Downloaded from here: Zelda Font.
